Events are a great way to showcase your photography talent and let the world know how they look while capturing their special moment.

Event photography is a general term for hiring photographers to click on-location pictures of an event or a ceremony. From weddings to a concert and small retreats, everything falls under the category of event photography. One of the main prerequisites for an event photographer is to have the ability to be flexible in photography for different types of events.

Event photography

While it could be challenging to adapt to the environment and the people present, it is also your job to make them look stunning. In addition to personal events, corporate events also fall under this umbrella, and as a photographer, it is important to be able to adapt to different events in general.

Here are a few important aspects to keep in mind before diving into the photography business

Understanding the client’s expectations and needs

As mentioned above, events can be of different types and vary considerably concerning people, professionalism, ambiance, and many more. Therefore, it is always best to consider the client’s needs before deciding what kind of images must be clicked.

One of the best ways to do so is to arrange a meeting a week or two before the event and understand all the client’s requirements. Then, put together a short list of inspirations and research on the same in the selected venue.

Arriving early

Once you have a clear idea about the event and the tasks in the ambiance, it is essential to arrive at least 2 hours before the location so that you can set up your equipment and take snapshots of the place before it gets crowded.

Planning shots

Every event will have guests and a group of prominent people responsible for the event. Therefore, segregate and distribute your team to take pictures of everything and everyone without missing the most important people or details of the event.

For instance, taking pictures of the VIPs and the audience’s reaction simultaneously is essential, without missing even the tiniest detail.

Planning shots

Make use of different settings.

If you own a low-light camera to capture pictures of the event, you have the chance to take decent photos, even when there is a bright light in the surroundings. However, it is also important to play around with different lenses and settings of your camera before the event so that you get the best shot on the day of the ceremony.

A wedding is one of the most memorable days in a person’s life. As much as it is essential to stay in the moment, it is also equally important to hire the best photographers who can capture every single emotion through the lens. Hence, wedding photographers are responsible for showcasing their talent and taking the best pictures possible.

If you’re an aspiring event photographer looking for ways to capture the best moments of someone’s life, this article is for you! We have outlined tips and tricks to get you started on your journey!

Taking time to scan the location

Location plays a vital role in setting the tone of the place. As a photographer, you must capture the aesthetic decor and essence of the place before it gets crowded with people. You can also check online and see pictures of the venue to get a better idea of the climatic conditions, the environment, and the different eye-catching factors of the venue. You can also research how sunrays hit different areas of the spot and how you can plan post-wedding shoots in the location.

Checking your gears

No photographer wants to make the mistake of not checking their gear on the big day! It is imperative to ensure all your camera equipment is working ideally and are equipped with fully charged batteries. Get your lens and equipment cleaned the previous day, and always carry backup gears, lest something go wrong. If you require additional lighting, it is also essential to carry them. One of the best ways to prepare for the big day is to scan the place a day or two before the wedding.

Carry assistant photographers

Weddings are a mix of fun rituals and ceremonies, most of which happen simultaneously. Having an assistant to capture the anonymous shots and other videos of people assembled in the ceremony is essential. One person can’t do all the job! Taking an assistant will decrease your load and help capture the best moment that might have missed your eye.

Pay attention to details.

Most couples flip through their wedding albums to catch their missed events. However, there could also be small ceremonies and events which might mean the world to the couple and their families. It is essential to capture those moments amidst the rush and display the finer details of the wedding. Even the slightest attention to detail can make a big difference in a picture. Take lessons on different lighting.

Irrespective of the décor, the great ambiance, and other eye-catching qualities of the ceremony, lighting plays a crucial role in deciding how your pictures come out! Make use of a lens with a faster aperture to get most of the lighting out of the scene.

Can I just start by saying this was a wedding photographer’s dream to shoot – grape vines, vibrant color, handmade thoughtful details, and the most amazingly sweet couple who couldn’t be more in love with each other! There wedding day was full of personal moments. From her grandmother’s bracelet to the table numbers made during Brittany’s bridal shower.

Instead of traditional readings, Brittany and Andrew had about a dozen of their friends come up to give advice on a happy marriage. Some was heartfelt, some was funny, and some was simply “If you found you’re struggling with something, try again and do it her way.” I’ve seen a lot of ceremonies over the years, and this will stand out to me as a really great idea! Their officiant was also a friend who made the ceremony really personal and full of laughs for everyone there.

I so enjoyed working with Brittany and Andrew for their wedding, and I hope you’ll equally love seeing highlights from their big celebration!

When all my friends were getting married, it was a sure thing that I would cry at a wedding. Then as I started photographing more of them, I got into “work mode” and could remain stoic and focused on shooting with the best of them. Something about Lindsey and Andrew’s wedding had me a weepy mess though. And it wasn’t just once! It seemed the waterworks were flowing throughout the day.

It was just such a sweet and romantic and happy and heartfelt kind of day. All of it. But the part that got me the most was Lindsey’s dad’s speech during the reception. He told the story of how Lindsey wanted to date and he decided the time was ok, but he said to her that he wanted to be the one to take her out on her first date. When date night came, he walked around the the front door, rang the bell, greeted her mom, came inside to talk to Lindsey and her mom for a few minutes, let her mom know where they were going and what time they’d be home. Then he walked her out to the car, opened the door, pulled out her chair at the restaurant, chatted with her throughout dinner, picked up the check, opened the restaurant and car doors again for her, and drove her home on time. At the end of the date he told her how much fun he’d had and that she was ready to go on her own dates. But that if any guy didn’t treat her as well as he did tonight, then she shouldn’t give him the time of day because he wasn’t good enough for me. OMG. Where are the tissues! That was about the sweetest thing I ever heard! I love that so much!

So while you wipe the tears from your eyes, enjoy some highlights from Lindsey and Andrew’s wedding day! It was a honor to be part of it all, and I wish you both eternal years of happiness!

There were two things Jenna told me she wanted to have for her wedding day at Belmont Country Club. One, she didn’t want it to rain. And two, she didn’t want either her or Jimmy to be too hot. Well on a slightly overcast day in October, Jenna got her wish. She also got to marry a great guy in Jimmy too!

Before they said their I Do’s surrounded by about 180 of the friends and family, Jenna made sure a special gift was delivered to Jimmy. A pretty sweet watch and a notebook where the first few pages were filled with personal thoughts and wishes before they met at the end of the aisle. Jimmy wouldn’t read out loud what Jenna wrote, but he had a smile on his face the whole time he was reading!

Back during their engagement, they mentioned that it was too bad they didn’t start dating sooner than they did because they were so happy together. Well now that Jenna and Jimmy have tied the knot, I hope they have a lifetime of happy years to make up for that lost time.

Enjoy some of the highlights from their preppy navy and pink wedding day!

There were definitely no nerves. At least none that I could see. Instead it was all excited smiles, big laughs, and jokes among friends. Neither Jenn nor Neil could contain just how excited they were to be marrying each other. And no errant eyelashes or missing flower pins were going to change that!

In fact Jenn and Neil wore those big smiles and their hearts on their sleeves all day long. Theirs was a celebration from sun up to well past sun down. And it was so much fun, for me included! You just can’t help it when you’re around these two. I’m actually a little bummed that their wedding day has now happened. And I’m definitely jealous of their South African honeymoon!

So while I could gush on about just how great and fun this couple is, I hope you can experience it yourself with some highlights from their wedding day at River Creek Country Club in Leesburg, VA. Enjoy!

I love it when a couple has a great sense of humor. They don’t take things or themselves too seriously, and live to the fullest. Barri and Mike are definitely one of those couples. Just wait until you see their cake! It’s definitely one of the best toppers I’ve seen. It had me laughing and it’s certainly unlike anything I’ve seen before. But it’s fun and funny and a great reflection on these two.

But before we got to the cake, they were leading the way on the dance floor. Making jokes during the ceremony that had everyone laughing. And wiping away tears as some of their dearest friends and family made it clear just how much Barri and Mike mean to them. It was one of the more heartfelt and lighthearted weddings I’ve been to. Plus they were the first to set up al fresco dining on the Birkby House’s patio. With an August wedding date, they got incredibly lucky to have one of the most beautiful mid-70s afternoons to enjoy it all.

So enjoy some of the highlights from Barri and Mike’s Birkby House wedding!
